Cricket nets look simple from a distance — but good practice setups depend on more than hanging netting between posts. Get the fundamentals right and you'll use it for decades.

How long does a backyard cricket net need to be?

This is the first question to resolve — and it depends on how seriously you'll be using it. A practice lane for younger players with short bowling runs can work at 14–16 metres. For any serious adult bowling with a meaningful run-up, you want 20–24 metres minimum.

The length of a cricket net is not just about the batting crease — it includes the bowler's run-up and safe overshoot at the batting end. A net that's too short is a safety hazard and significantly degrades the training quality.

Permanent vs semi-permanent structures

Permanent steel-framed nets with concrete footings feel better and last longer. The structure is more stable, the netting sits under consistent tension, and it looks more intentional in the backyard. It's also a more significant planning decision — it becomes a semi-permanent feature that affects how the block looks and may require council notification depending on height and coverage.

Semi-permanent or modular setups use anchor-in or bolt-down post systems with removable netting panels. Less expensive, more flexible, and easier to dismantle if you move — but the structural stability is usually lower and the netting typically ages faster.

Pitch options

  • Synthetic cricket turf (mat): The most popular choice for residential and school nets. Consistent bounce, low maintenance, and suits all weather conditions. Laid over a concrete or asphalt base.
  • Concrete pitch: Fast, consistent, very durable. Can be hard on knees for bowlers and produces very true bounce. Popular for serious training setups.
  • Composite rubber-turf systems: Softer underfoot for bowlers. Provides more realistic batting conditions. Higher upfront cost but better for regular, intensive use.
  • Natural grass pitch: Beautiful when maintained, but requires significant ongoing care, dries unevenly, and produces variable bounce. Not practical for most residential setups.

Netting quality — where buyers cut corners and regret it

Cheap netting ages quickly in Australian UV conditions, becomes brittle, and loses structural integrity. A net that fails after two seasons is not a bargain. Key specifications to ask about:

  • HDPE vs polyester netting: High-density polyethylene is more UV-stable and durable in Australian conditions
  • Breaking strain: Minimum 40kg for serious practice nets; 60kg+ for club-grade setups
  • Mesh size: 40–50mm is standard for cricket; smaller mesh increases cost but reduces ball escape
  • Warranty: Quality netting should carry a 5+ year UV warranty from a reputable manufacturer
Safety matters: Side netting and end protection become critical when faster bowling is involved. A ball exiting a poorly enclosed net at pace is a genuine hazard to bystanders, windows, and neighbouring properties. Don't treat side panels as optional.

  2. Will there be a meaningful run-up, and how long does it need to be?
